Help us keep our doctors and nurses in rural communities
Without healthy GPs and nurses, we do not have healthy communities. By caring for our rural doctors and nurses, they will be there to care for those living in rural and remote communities.
Please donate today to give rural communities the healthcare they deserve.
Our rural communities are the backbone of Australia
- they provide 90% of the food on our tables
- they contribute 67% of Australia’s exports
- the value of their exports are $500 billion per year
- contribute more than 50% of tourism revenue
- they make up 28% of our population – 7 million people
But sadly, they are in crisis with ....
- only 2.5 doctors per 1,000 people (compared to 4.1 in urban areas)
- mortality rates 1.8 times higher with significantly more disease and injury
- underspend of $6.5 billion for rural health
- only 1% of health research funding
- doctors leaving rural practice, leaving rural communities without access to healthcare
As rural doctors, we are impacted by the challenges faced by those living in rural communities every day
- rural doctors neglect their own health in caring for their patients
- doctors suicide at nearly two times the rate of the general population
- 40% of rural healthcare workers travel more than 300km and 20% more than 800km to seek medical treatment
- 17% reported that lack of access to healthcare was a factor in deciding not to continue in rural practice
