Strengthening our commitment to rural health
Rural Doctors Foundation joins the National Rural Health Alliance (NHRA)
An opportunity to amplify our voice and strengthen our understanding of rural health
Our mission is clear: to promote better health in rural and remote communities and to grow our reputation as a leading rural health charity. In line with our strategic objectives, we are excited to announce our membership of the National Rural Health Alliance (NHRA).
Gaining insight
Our CEO, Fran Avon, recently attended the first NHRA Committee meeting which provided an invaluable opportunity to connect with key stakeholders and gain fresh perspectives on the pressing issues affecting rural communities. Two standout presentations provided key insights.
The political landscape: Key issues facing Australians
Evan Moorhead, Founding Director of Anacta, delivered an analysis of the current political climate in Australia. Not surprisingly, cost of living emerged as significant concern for Australians. Top three concerns were ranked as follows:
Issue |
Total top 3 |
1st ranking |
Cost of living |

Housing |

Health |

With 19% of respondents indicating affordability is the biggest challenge in healthcare and 14% highlighting workforce shortages, it is evident that accessibility and staffing remain critical concerns—especially in rural areas.
Understanding the triple disadvantage in rural health
Lauren Ware from NOUS Group presented on their research project for the NHRA, emphasising the triple disadvantage that rural communities experience in healthcare:
- Poorer social determinants of health – factors such as income, education, and employment negatively impact health outcomes.
- Limited service availability – fewer healthcare facilities and professionals mean longer wait times and reduced access to care.
- Higher access and delivery costs – the financial burden of healthcare is significantly greater in remote areas due to travel, limited resources, and higher operational costs.
Looking ahead
Our involvement with the NHRA provides a fantastic platform to contribute to meaningful change in rural healthcare. We are eager to continue these discussions, collaborate with key stakeholders, and contribute to government engagement efforts that support rural health initiatives. .
Stay tuned for updates as we join like-minded organisations to advocate for improved rural healthcare.
