Northern Queensland GPs can now apply for Life-Saving Trauma Kits

Rural doctors and communities across Northern Queensland could soon benefit from enhanced emergency response capabilities thanks to a grant to Rural Doctors Foundation from Queensland Gives.

The successful applicant will receive a fully equipped emergency trauma kit, known as Sandpiper Bags, for specially trained rural GPs in the Mount Isa and Isaac regions. Designed specifically for emergency medical response in remote settings, the kits enable doctors to deliver critical care while waiting for ambulance or aeromedical support to arrive. There are two free kits available.

Rural communities face unique healthcare challenges due to vast distances and limited access to services. Emergency response times can be significantly longer than in metropolitan areas, making access to appropriate medical equipment crucial for providing immediate, life-saving treatment.

The importance of these kits has already been demonstrated through the experience of rural GP Dr Alex Sleeman. After receiving a Sandpiper Bag through a previous Rural Doctors Foundation initiative, Dr Sleeman used the equipment to provide vital care to multiple patients involved in a serious vehicle rollover. Later, when he suffered severe injuries in a tractor accident himself, the same kit played a critical role in stabilising him before emergency crews arrived.

If successful, the project is expected to directly support two rural GPs while benefiting more than 40,000 residents, as well as visitors and travellers throughout the region. This initiative will strengthen community resilience, improve trauma outcomes and equip local doctors with the tools needed to provide advanced care in remote locations.
