Free ear loupes for GP practices in NT and Western Queensland

Aurizon Community Giving Fund supporting rural communities

Thanks to support from the Aurizon Community Giving Fund, we’ve been able to deliver much‑needed ear loupes to general practice clinics across Mt Isa, Cloncurry and Julia Creek – a simple piece of equipment that can make a real difference in day‑to‑day care.

These towns are part of our latest GPs4RuralDocs program, with clinics set to roll out in 2026.  Alongside the program’s broader support for rural doctors and nurses, the ear loupes are a practical way to help our health practitioners do what they do best: provide high‑quality care close to home.

Why ear loupes matter in the bush

In rural and remote towns, access to specialist equipment isn’t always easy. Ear loupes give GPs better magnification and lighting during ear examinations, helping them assess problems more accurately and with greater confidence. That can mean fewer delays, fewer referrals, and better outcomes for patients  – especially kids and people with ongoing ear health issues.

Thanks to the Aurizon Community Giving Fund, practices in Mt Isa, Cloncurry and Julia Creek now have access to this vital equipment, helping to level the playing field between metropolitan and rural healthcare.

A moment of joy in Julia Creek

When ear loupes were first promoted as part of the program, the response from the bush was immediate and heartfelt.

Dr Pip, a GP based in Julia Creek, was delighted to learn that her practice would be receiving one. Like many rural doctors, she sees many presentations and knows how valuable the right tools can be in a busy, remote clinic. Moments like this remind us that small, targeted support can have a big impact –  not just clinically, but in how supported rural doctors feel.

Her enthusiasm is a reminder that small, targeted investments can have a big impact on morale as well as clinical practice.

Looking ahead to GPs4RuralDocs in 2026

The ear loupes are just one piece of our work and support to our GPs4RuralDocs program, which is focused on supporting rural and remote GPs, nurses and allied health practitioners through practical resources, connection and wellbeing initiatives. As clinics begin rolling out in 2026, we’re excited to continue working alongside these communities to ensure rural GPs and nurses feel supported, equipped and valued.

One more opportunity to support a rural practice

We’re also pleased to share that one ear loupe is still available and yet to be allocated.

If you know of a GP practice in Katherine, Northern Territory, that would benefit from this equipment, we would love to hear from you. This is a wonderful opportunity to extend the reach of the Aurizon Community Giving Fund’s generosity even further and support another remote healthcare team.
